The petition of certain electors of Australia draws the attention of the
House to the opposition from the community to Phillip Ruddock’s decision
to establish an Immigration Detention Centre at the Meeandah Army Stores
site at Pinkenba.

This opposition is based on: the unsuitability of the chosen site, which
is in a metropolitan area; the lack of consultation with the local
community before the site was chosen; there is no commitment for the
facility not to extend beyond a 200 bed facility; Mr Ruddock’s previous
commitment not to force a detention centre on a community that did not
want it.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to prevent the establishment
of an immigration detention centre at this site.
