The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the
attention of the House the urgent need for a safe pedestrian crossing
across Dawson Parade, Grovely, Brisbane, adjacent to Grovely Railway
Station (which is situated on the eastern side of Dawson Parade, south of
the level crossing). The volume of road traffic along Dawson Parade
(north-south) is steady and extremely heavy in peak hours. Commuters and
residents needing to cross Dawson Parade in the vicinity of this station,
regularly take unsafe advantage of the boom gates being down at the level
crossing to dash across the road and/or train tracks, rather than waiting
until a train has passed and there is, eventually, a safe break in the
road traffic. On Friday 23 May 2003 at approximately 4.45 pm the
Principal Petitioner and up to 30 other commuters witnessed another
passenger (on the western side of the level crossing) being clipped and
tossed through the air as the train travelled west towards Keperra. The
nearest pedestrian crossings to Grovely Station across Dawson Parade, lie
400-500 metres to the north and 400-500 metres to the south.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to approve and expedite
the installation of a safe pedestrian crossing across Dawson Parade,
Grovely, Brisbane, preferably south of the level crossing and in
accordance with safe road practices for vehicles and pedestrians alike.
