The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House the extreme danger that school children are facing five days per week as they cross a six lane highway without supervision on the way to and from school (White Rock State School). The current policy of TMR (Transport & Main Roads Dept) is that the school must be no more than 200m from a crossing, road not to be more than two lanes and no traffic lights. The highway being crossed is less than 150m from White Rock State School, there are six lanes and though there are lights, children often cross when there is a break in traffic. Regarding the TMR's position that the road is too dangerous for a trained School Crossing Supervisor: this is not acceptable. Surely it is more dangerous for a young unaccompanied child who may make the wrong choice and cross at the wrong time. There have already been incidents at these lights.
We are not asking for the Supervisor to stand in the middle of the highway and make traffic stop but to stand at the lights and supervise children to ensure they cross safely on the 'green man'.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to instruct TMR to install School Crossing Supervisors at the traffic lights on the corner of the Bruce Highway and Foster Road and also at the matching traffic lights directly opposite on the other side of the Bruce Highway, White Rock.
