Queensland citizens draws to the attention of the House to the fact a diverse but disconnected Indigenous art and cultural narrative exists at and around the Cultural Centre precinct which needs a pivotal iconic investment.
Your petitioners, therefore, request House to call upon the State Government to strongly preference local Indigenous art and art forms for all the fit out and interior design elements of the new QPAC theatre from the carpet, curtains and sculptures but most importantly to the art on the walls. We also call upon the State Government to run a poll to select a female Indigenous artist to name the theatre after so the theatre becomes a spiritual link to the Neville Bonner Bridge. The resulting package would be key activator for tourism while being a totem for aspiring Indigenous artists. The package combined with the John Truscott 1988 Expo 88 collection in the G20 Room; to the broader Indigenous collection in the Convention Centre; to the David Hinchliffe Collection at QPAC, and with the future co-operation of the ABC, Griffith University and Southbank, the result would be an international standard art, performance and cultural experience for international and interstate visitors coming Brisbane like no other in the country.
