Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the City of Gold Coast’s intention to install 6.2 metre light poles on the Oceanway adjacent to the beach between Tugun and Bilinga without undertaking an Environmental Impact Assessment, as required under the Australian Government’s National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife Version 1.0. The light pollution may harm threatened species in the area, particularly sea turtles who hatch on this stretch of beach.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to intervene with the City of Gold Coast’s planned commencement of installation in November 2020 and ensure a full Environmental Impact Assessment, as required under the Australian Government’s National Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife Version 1.0 is undertaken before the installation of these potentially harmful lights proceeds and a full environmental impact can be assessed.
