TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House, the need for additional support and care for our most vulnerable members of the community, those living in Aged Care facilities, during the recurring lockdowns, due to the COVID-19 virus. With the varied high needs of many residents there is a need for family and friends to assist with maintaining the mental and physical health of these most valued members in our community.

The majority of these residents live full time in an aged care facilities, unlike the majority of people who are hospitalised for, relatively speaking, short periods. As well, they are least able to cope with, or understand, why they are not seeing their loved ones.

We request that a designated relative/carer who is fully flu and COVID-19 vaccinated and, with appropriate safeguards similar to those that are in place for those that work in aged care facilities, be allowed access to visit and assist their family member, on a regular basis, to maintain their mental health and wellbeing.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure the Queensland Government and Queensland Department of Health, allow a designated person to attend to the additional care and needs of a resident in Aged Care, to maintain their mental health and general well-being, during times of aged care facility lockdowns.
