Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the proposed demolition of Suttons Beach Pavilion at Redcliffe by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

This decision has been made without consultation with the community. The community is outraged that an iconic 85 year old building will be demolished without consultation. An online petition already has 12000 signatures.

The community is concerned about:

  • Lack of transparency and community engagement in the processes leading to council's decision.
  • Failure of the council as the owner to have maintained the building over a number of years.
  • Building reports do not identify that demolition is the solution and only option.
  • Destruction of an iconic Redcliffe Building. Since 1937 a Pavilion has been in this place. It has a great deal of history and a connection with most Redcliffe residents and visitors from across Queensland, interstate and internationally. Registered with the National Trust.
  • Council already have in place plans are for green space, a toilet block and food trucks. This is not what the community wants.
  • Destruction of business which occupies the building, employing 48 before any community consultation has taken place. The facilities there are truly a social hub, this being the only eatery on the waterfront itself.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to commit to do all within its power to halt the demolition plans until there has been meaningful community engagement and until a truly independent assessment with associated options and costs is completed.
