Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the current level of crime in Far North Queensland (FNQ) and the need to reform youth justice and child safety.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to:

  1. hold an open public inquiry in the FNQ region into the current child safety and juvenile justice system, including an examination of the issues and barriers preventing Government from addressing the juvenile crime problem;
  2. review and reform the youth justice legislation to identify deficiencies and offer alternatives that better meet the needs and expectations of the public and preserves public safety;
  3. include victims of crime and other concerned community members in reform decisions;
  4. legislate for parents and guardians, including government departments, to also be held responsible and accountable for the crimes youth in their care are committing; and
  5. reform child safety legislation to empower foster carers and recognise the important role they play and ensure they are not undermined.
