Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the disaster occurring on Chevron Island, Surfers Paradise. The inclusion of Chevron Island in the frame area of the Light Rail Urban Renewal Area in the mid 2000's meant that Chevron Island is currently zoned high density. Prior to this the Island had a low-medium rise height restriction.

At this time there are 20+ development applications approved for the Island with another four under construction, and further proposals awaiting approval. These developments range from 7-40 storeys, most being bulky, dense apartment complexes virtually built up to the boundaries of existing homes. This is having a devastating reduction to amenity, and added anxiety, to neighbouring residents in the form of potential damage to existing buildings during the construction process, and once completed, loss of sunlight, privacy, and breezes. The already constructed and occupied developments are negatively impacting inadequate infrastructure, adding to the limited access to and from the Island. Thomas Drive runs through the centre serving as the main east/west access to Surfers Paradise.

The new apartments are not affordable housing and will not ease the housing crisis - most 2-bedroom apartments start at $700K+.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to ensure legislative changes previously submitted by the Gold Coast City Council, to reduce the building height of developments on Chevron Island to 33m (approximately 9 storeys), are approved. This request should be enacted within six months of receipt of this petition.
