TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draw to the attention of the House the failure of the State Government, the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services, as custodians of the State Forest, to protect our endangered, vulnerable and near threatened species by allowing the destruction of old growth, hollow bearing, habitat trees within endangered regional ecosystem 12.5.6c of Deongwar State Forest.

The current logging is destroying large old trees with stump diameters of between 70cm and 85cm which are known to provide the large hollows essential to the survival of the endangered greater glider. The greater glider typically occupies a small home range of about 3 hectares in fertile forests such as these and will utilise up to 20 individual hollows according to its needs throughout the seasons. When greater glider habitat is destroyed 90% fail to successfully disperse and survive in other areas.

Historical cycles of logging as prescribed by the not fit for propose "Code of practice for native forest timber production on Queensland State forest estate 2020" have resulted in an overall reduction in the age class of trees within the State forest estate. As a result the majority of the forest is unable to provide the minimum of 6 live habitat trees per hectare deemed necessary to support the greater glider.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to stop the logging of Deongwar State Forest and protect our endangered, vulnerable and near threatened species including the greater glider.
