Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House to the many excessively long low-speed zones around small town that have no safety purpose. Speed zones that have no safety purpose lack credibility and encourage people to ignore them. An example is the 60 km/h zone around the small town of Bororen on the Bruce Highway that extends 450 metres north of the built-up area on a safe, straight road with no side streets or driveways. It clearly lacks credibility as can be seen by the fact that recently 13% of vehicles were declared to be speeding, that is 6,508 from 50,181 vehicles. If this low-speed zone was credible to all drivers, none of them would be speeding. This would be true for all excessively long low-speed zones around other small towns in Queensland. It is important that all low-speed zones have a credible safety purpose so everyone will take them seriously.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to reduce the length of all low-speed zones (60 km/h or less) around small towns to less than 100 metres both before and after the built up areas. Require all camera detected offenses to be emailed to the alleged offender within 24 hours or they become unenforceable.
