Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House the fact that there are currently rules in place in Queensland which discriminate against people with autism. Autism is a difference in brain structure. The differences in an autistic person's brain are present from birth and do not "worsen" over time. These differences are therefore present at the time the autistic person takes their driving test. If an autistic person passes their driving test then there should be no question as to their ability to drive, no need for a medical clearance and no conditions should be noted on their licence. Either the tests set out by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) are adequate to ensure that only people who are able to drive safely receive a licence or they are not and the process needs to be revised.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all within its power to require DTMR to remove the requirement for people with autism and other neurotypes (eg. ADD) to provide a medical certificate in order to obtain their drivers licence.
