TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the
House that the James Cook University Campus at the corner of Palmerston
St and Fulham Rd Vincent is the current location of a hydrotherapy pool
that is used extensively by between 150 and 200 people each week. This
pool has been modified so it can be used for rehabilitation and
recreation by the disabled, frail and infirm, and is the only pool of its
type in the Townsville-Thuringowa area. It is used by residents of the
Twin Cities, as well as people from the surrounding region.

It has recently been announced that the university will sell the JCU
Campus at Vincent in February 2005. This threatens the hydrotherapy pool
with closure, which will severely impact on the many members of the wider
community who currently use the pool.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to authorise the Queensland
State Government to purchase the property known as the JCU Vincent Campus
in order to preserve the hydrotherapy pool and associated facilities for
use by all residents of Townsville, Thuringowa and the surrounding
region.
