The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the
House the progress many State Schools are making in promoting speciality
curriculum areas and in some cases schools of excellence, and the fact
that the school transport subsidy scheme does not recognise the
differences in subjects offered to students by some State Schools.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to amend the eligibility
criteria for students wishing to avail themselves of the school transport
assistance scheme, to provide for students who wish to attend a school
other than the closest school to the students residence, provided that
the preferred school is offering specialty subjects that the student
wishes to take, and does take. And, that this alternative school is
within 1.6 kilometres (for primary school students) or 3.2 kilometres
(for high school students) of the closest school.
