Paper Petition

The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House that we strongly object to the section of the Bruce Highway upgrade proposal (S1) between Cooroy Connection Road and Pomona Connection Road, as outlined by the Bruce Highway (Cooroy to Curra) Strategic Planning Study.We wish to make it known to the Parliamentarians that to proceed, in spite of our objections, with the S1 route (the only option the Study has proposed between Cooroy and Pomona Connection Roads), would mean:• the forced resumption of many homes and landholdings;• loss of easy local access to the highway / other roads / community facilities such as ambulance, fire brigade services, Meals on Wheels and business enterprises;• savage drops in property values;• increased traffic congestion in our rural area; and• negative social and environmental impacts.Your petitioners therefore request that you, as our elected representatives, ensure that the Department of Main Roads and its Study Team seriously investigate alternatives to the S1 proposal, with the aims of minimising the resumption of homes and avoiding extensive ecological and social damage to our rural environment.
