The Opening of Parliament is a significant event in Queensland’s parliamentary calendar. This marks the 58th occasion since 1860 that Members have gathered to begin a new term in service to those who elected them.
Following a general election, there are three essential steps before the Assembly can commence its work:
- Summons by the Governor – This officially sets the time and date for the Parliament's meeting.
- Swearing-In & Election of the Speaker – All Members are sworn in, and a Speaker is elected to lead the Assembly.
- Opening of Parliament – The Governor, as the Crown’s representative, delivers an opening speech, signifying the beginning of a new parliamentary term.
These steps ensure that Members of Parliament are prepared to represent and serve the people of Queensland.

Loud Sounds: 19-Gun Salute
Details: To be confirmed.
During the Ceremonial Opening of the 58th Parliament, a 19-gun salute will be fired from the Kangaroo Point cliffs upon the Governor’s arrival at Parliament House. Known as the Vice Regal Salute, this tradition honours Queensland’s highest office and has been observed during the past three parliamentary terms. While heads of state receive a 21-gun salute, this 19-gun salute is reserved for our Governor, symbolising respect and grandeur. Please be mindful of the loud sounds around the city during this time.
