Referral
On 12 June 2018, Hon Dianne Farmer MP, Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence introduced the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (Commonwealth Powers) Bill 2018.
In accordance with Standing Order 131 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly, the Bill was referred to the Health, Communities, Disability Services and Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee (the committee) for detailed consideration.
The Bill
According to the explanatory notes, the objectives of the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (Commonwealth Powers) Bill 2018 are to:
- enable the Federal Government’s National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (the National Scheme) to operate in Queensland
- introduce a framework to enable appropriate information sharing by Queensland Government agencies for the purposes of the National Scheme, and
- amend the Victims of Crime Assistance Act 2009 to provide that redress payments may not be deducted from victim assistance payments under that Act.
