Criminal Law (Domestic Violence) Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2015

Public Hearings
Subject to submissions received, the committee will hold a public hearing with invited witnesses at Parliament House on Wednesday, 24 February 2016. Further details will appear here in due course. The hearing will be broadcast live on-line and will be able to be seen here.
Objectives of the Bill
The key objectives of the Bill are to –
- Amend the Penalties and Sentences Act 1992 to make provision for domestic and family violence to be an aggravating factor on sentence
- Amend the Criminal Code to create an offence of choking, suffocation or strangulation in a domestic setting
- Amend legislation to allow a court to receive a submission from a party on what they consider to be the appropriate sentence or sentence range for the court to impose.

Referral
On 2 December 2015, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Training and Skills, the Hon Yvette D’Ath MP, introduced the Criminal Law (Domestic Violence) Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2015 into the Queensland Parliament. In accordance with Standing Order 131 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly, the Bill was referred to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee (the committee) for detailed consideration.
The committee is required to report to the Parliament by 7 March 2016.
