Call for Submissions

Objective of the Bill

The Bill has over 20 separate policy objectives which will make various amendments to a range of criminal law and criminal law related Acts administered by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice. 

The Bill will amend the following Acts:

  • Acts Interpretation Act 1954;
  • Animal Care and Protection Act 2001;
  • Bail Act 1980;
  • Criminal Code;
  • Criminal Proceeds Confiscation Act 2002;
  • Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003;
  • Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1984;
  • Drugs Misuse Act 1986;
  • Evidence Act 1977;
  • Justice Act 1886;
  • Penalties and Sentences Act 1992; and
  • Youth Justices Act 1992.

The Committee resolved not to hold a public hearing on the Bill.

Referral

On 8 May 2014 the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Honourable Jarrod Bleijie MP, introduced the Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2014 into the Queensland Parliament.  In accordance with Standing Order 131 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly, the Bill was referred to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee (the Committee) for detailed consideration.

By motion of the House, the Committee is required to report to the Parliament by 28 July 2014.

Report

On 28 July 2014, the Committee tabled its Report No. 68, Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2014. A copy of the report is available here or can be accessed at Related Publications.

As the Committee made a single recommendation for the Legislative Assembly to pass the Bill, there is no requirement for the Government to table a response.

The Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2014 was passed, with amendment, by the Legislative Assembly on 5 August 2014.
