Report No. 70, 56th Parliament - Crime and Corruption Amendment Bill 2020

About the Bill

On 13 August 2020, Hon Yvette D’Ath MP, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, introduced the Crime and Corruption Amendment Bill 2020. The Bill was referred to the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee for detailed consideration.

According to the explanatory notes, the policy objectives of the Bill are to amend the Crime and Corruption Act 2001 to implement the recommendations of the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) relating to the publicising of allegations and complaints in the following reports:

  • Publicising allegations of corrupt conduct: Is it in the Public Interest?, December 2016 (CCC’s 2016 report)
  • An investigation into allegations relating to the appointment of a school principal, July 2020 (CCC’s 2020 report).

On 13 August 2020 the committee called for submissions in respect of the Bill.

On 14 August 2020 the Attorney-General advised that the Bill was withdrawn (see media statement here).

On 17 August 2020 the committee closed submissions.

On 10 September 2020, the Legislative Assembly resolved to withdraw the Crime and Corruption Amendment Bill 2020.
