Role of the Auditor-General 

The role of the Auditor-General is to provide Parliament with independent assurance of public sector accountability and performance. This is achieved through reporting to Parliament on the results of its financial and performance audits.

The report summarises the audit results of Queensland’s 77 local government entities (councils) and the entities they control.

The report made several recommendations to local councils, in addition to those made in prior years that remain unresolved. Recommendations related to:

  • Reassessing maturity levels of their financial statement preparation processes
  • Assessing their audit committees against the actions in the 2020-21 audit committee report
  • Improving the overall control environment
  • Reviewing asset management plans to confirm that plans include planned spending on capital project
  • Reviewing asset consumption ratios in preparation for the new sustainability framework
  • Enhancing liquidity management.

Referral to Committee 

The committee is responsible for assessing the integrity, economy, efficiency and effectiveness of government financial management by examining government financial documents and considering reports of the Auditor-General.

The Committee of the Legislative Assembly referred this Auditor-General report to the committee for consideration on 12 May 2022.

The committee will also consider recurring issues contained in the following Auditor-General’s reports as part of its examination:

These reports were initially referred to the former Economics and Governance Committee but the examination lapsed on dissolution of the 56th Parliament in October 2020.
