Role of the Auditor-General 

The role of the Auditor-General is to provide Parliament with independent assurance of public sector accountability and performance. This is achieved through reporting to Parliament on the results of its financial and performance audits.

The audit examined how the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water collects and uses information to manage risks to dam safety. Dams are major pieces of infrastructure that provide water for drinking, irrigation, flood mitigation, energy, and the extraction of minerals. There are 107 referable dams in Queensland, and Queensland state entities and local governments own 92 of these dams.

Referral to Committee 

The committee is responsible for assessing the integrity, economy, efficiency and effectiveness of government financial management by examining government financial documents and considering reports of the Auditor-General.

The Committee of the Legislative Assembly referred this Auditor-General report to the committee for consideration on 24 February 2022.
