Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that the Queensland based Suncorp Group, which encompasses Suncorp. AAMI, Vero, Apia, Shannons and GIO, is sending jobs offshore to third party providers without the express consent or prior knowledge of the customers involved. Suncorp is one of a number of large financial services providers engaged in the practice of offshoring that results in the loss of jobs (including future job opportunities) and confidential customer data being accessed overseas.
Customers accessing insurance services often do so after suffering traumatic circumstances. Sending jobs offshore reduces local knowledge of customer circumstances and may hinder the efficient handling of customer claims.
Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to take all practical steps to support and encourage a strong and comprehensive finance industry in Queensland which:
- prioritises investment in local jobs and skills development
- protects the interests of customers by ensuring that financial services are provided locally where local capability exists
- protects the information of its customers by ensuring it is not sent to overseas third parties without customer consent.
