The Parliamentary Education Team offers professional learning opportunities for teachers to further their understanding of parliamentary processes and governance in Queensland.

Teachers are also welcome to attend our paid professional programs, including half-day and full-day seminars at Parliament House in Brisbane and full-day seminars in different regional centres each year.

Democracy in action is a free professional development webinar series that has been created especially for teachers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of our democratic system of government.

Facilitated by the Queensland Parliamentary Service (PS), Parliamentary Education Office (PEO), Supreme Court Library Queensland (SCLQ) and the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), you'll learn about key features of our representative democracy and the history of our legal system.

2025 program  

Term 2

Law reform within a dynamic society

Wednesday 14 May, 3.45pm to 5pm 

During this session you will:

  • deepen your understanding of the parliamentary inquiry process,
  • learn more about the relationship between law reform and case law, and
  • explore why laws may require change.

Term 3

Accountability and the rule of law 

Wednesday 6 August, 3.45pm to 5pm 

During this session you will:

  • explore the rule of law doctrine through real-world examples,
  • learn about the different ways law is scrutinised in Queensland and Australia and how this contributes to the accountability of parliament, and
  • discuss the effectiveness of different mechanisms of scrutiny.

Term 4

Human rights and law making

Wednesday 22 October, 3.45pm to 5pm 

During this session you will:

  • learn about current human rights frameworks and legislation,
  • explore how human rights impact law-making practices and processes in Queensland and Australia, and
  • investigate how human rights mechanisms have been applied in Queensland courts.

Professional development on-demand

Online only

We can provide a free, online professional development opportunity for your school, cluster area or department after school or on a student free day (subject to availability). 

Suitable for HASS, Civics and Citizenship and Legal Studies teachers, you can request a tailored professional development program on one (or more) of the following topics: 

  • Three levels of government 
  • Making law in Queensland 
  • Human rights and the legislative process 
  • Get involved: avenues for active citizenship in the classrooom 
  • Scrutiny 
  • Who's who in parliament 
  • How to run a legislative role play

Not only will our parliamentary educators share information about Queensland Parliament, but they will also answer any questions you have and showcase examples and resources you can use in your classrooms.

Teacher Advisory Group (TAG)

The Teacher Advisory Group (TAG) brings together educators from various levels and sectors of education in Queensland to assist in the development of our resources.The purpose of TAG is to:   

  • provide insight and advice on the development of activities, events and resources in line with the curriculum and contemporary classroom practice

  • identify opportunities for broadening the reach of the program, particularly to engage with educators and students in regional and remote communities.

Group members are appointed for 12 month terms, and may seek continued membership. Parliamentary Education may renew nominations during the 12 month term if needs arise.

 

Who can apply to join?

All teachers currently registered in Queensland are welcome to apply, regardless of year level or education sector.

How often does TAG meet?

The TAG meets quarterly. Advice may be sought from members in between meetings via email or phone.

How do I apply to join?

Nominations open in December each year. Nominations for 2025 have now closed.
