Youth Parliaments provide the opportunity for school students to serve as "Youth Members" and gain a hands-on understanding of Queensland’s parliamentary processes. To be advised when Youth Parliament dates open, you can subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on Humanitix.
The Youth Parliament Program
In a Youth Parliament, students introduce and then debate a mock bill or motion. The content of the bill or motion will reflect topical issues of interest to Queensland students. Youth Parliaments also include an Adjournment Debate which allows youth members the opportunity to make a speech about an issue falling within the jurisdiction of the Queensland Parliament.
The Youth Parliament is hosted by the Queensland Parliament and will usually be chaired by the Speaker, the Honourable Pat Weir MP along with other Members of Parliament. The presiding Members will ensure that debates are conducted in accordance with parliamentary practice.
In 2025, the following Youth Parliament events are offered:
- Kingaroy Primary Youth Parliament - 20 March
- Legal Studies Youth Parliament* (for Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students) - 23 May
- Brisbane North Primary Youth Parliament* - 5 June
- Ipswich Primary Youth Parliament* - 8 August
- Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament (Cairns) - 21 August
- Brisbane South Primary Youth Parliament* - 24 October
- Eric Deeral Indigenous Youth Parliament* - 26 November
*events marked with an asterix are held in the Legislative Assembly Chamber at Parliament House in Brisbane.
How do I get my students involved?
When each Youth Parliament event opens, schools are invited to nominate students to participate.
- Primary Youth Parliaments - each school can nominate up to ten students from Years 5 and 6.
- Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament - each school can nominate up to ten Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students from Years 5 and 6.
- Legal Studies Youth Parliament - each school can nominate up to four Legal Studies students from Years 11 and 12.
Once nominations close, available places will be allocated and schools notified of the number of seats we've been able to allocate.
What will the day's schedule look like?
